Introduction
For most people it's hard to think of Orlando without a giant mouse popping into your head. Mickey Mouse is the cartoon conception Walt Disney, whose vision has transformed Orlando, and the adjacent Lake Buena Vista and Kissimmee areas, into the world's busiest, biggest and best-known tourist Mecca. Currently the Disney territory in Orlando includes four theme parks, dozens of minor attractions, thousands of hotel rooms and holiday apartments, and hundreds of restaurants and snack bars. Smartly dressed vermin aside, it's not only the Disney magic that draws visitors to Orlando. There are other attractions here too, like Universal Studios, numerous water parks and Sea World, all adding to the maelstrom of thrills and pleasure palaces that this city is now renowned for.
Getting there
Orlando International Airport is located about 11kms southeast of Orlando. Many package holidays will include car rental due to the sheer size and distance between attractions. Public transport from the Airport to downtown Orlando is by way of Bus with multiple services departing at regular intervals throughout the day. Taxis are also available with metered rates.
What to do
Walt Disney World - Undoubtedly Orlando's most familiar landmark is the turreted Cinderella Castle that stands in the core of the original Disney Florida theme park, the Magic Kingdom, at Lake Buena Vista. Universal Studios – Some Experienced theme parkers do recommend that it takes at least two days to fully realize all the delights on offer at the Universal Orlando, which includes two theme parks: the Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. The movie-themed park with its breathtaking, innovative fun-rides, production studios and film sets also has three superb luxury on-site hotels so spending a night is an excellent idea. Wet ‘n’ Wild - One of Orlando's many water parks, Wet 'n Wild has the merit of being the most popular water attraction in the area and also the world's first amusement park devoted solely to water flumes, pools, slides and sun loungers. Its age is starting to show however and it's not as modern as the newer Disney themed waterparks Sea World – Located between the Disney parks at Lake Buena Vista and the downtown Orlando area is home of Shamu and the world famous Sea World attraction, which has been making a major splash in central Florida for more than 25 years. Kennedy Space Centre - The John F. Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral, is 74km to the southeast of Orlando on Florida's east coast, is one place in this state where fact is just as entertaining as fancy. Visitors to the centre follow the story of NASA's exploration of space through interactive exhibits, movies and tours.

There are apparently over 400 hotels in the resort area of Orlando so you’re bound to find your perfect accommodation. Nightlife

Introduction
Set in the middle of the Nevada Desert, Las Vegas was created with the sole purpose to entertain and has often been described as the world's largest adult theme park. Sin City is home to over a million people and welcomes 35 million more tourists each year to its sumptuous hotels and casinos. Visitors today would find it hard to believe that only 70 years ago this thriving city was a backwater with less than a thousand inhabitants and they only tourists they attracted was railway passengers stopping off to stretch their legs on the long journey between LA and Salt Lake City.
Getting there
Las Vegas McCarran Airport is on the outskirts of the City but only about 2kms from the Strip. The International Terminal is actually smaller then the domestic one but still has all the facilities . Assuming you clear Immigration you're free to collect your bags and hit the strip. If you've planned on staying sober enough to drive a car, a shuttle bus from outside the terminal will take you to the purpose built car hire center. If you're looking to take a taxi to your hotel you'll find these outside the terminal too... There is a bus service that stops near most hotels on the strip but if you cant afford a taxi journey at this stage then you're probably in the wrong place
What to do
Well what do you want to do? Seriously you can do pretty much anything your Imagination, and wallet, will allow you.
- The Casinos – Las Vegas has 15 of the 20 biggest hotels in the world, all within walking distance of each other. Each one has its own theme to attract people in the hope they will spend some dollars @ the casino tables.
- There’s the two BILLION dollar Venetian Hotel and Casino modelled on Venice with its replica of St Marks Square and Canals that run throughout the property complete with gondola travel.
- The Italian themed Bellagio is one of Las Vegas’ more opulent hotels with its world famous water and music show featuring the most powerful water cannons on the planet.
- The Mirage is an MGM owned casino which has a Volcano that shoots 100ft Flames into the sky every 15 minutes . The aquarium located behind the check in desk is another popular free attraction the 20,000 gallon saltwater tank features all sorts of marine life from Sharks to Angelfish
- The Liberace Museum – For those wanting a little more “glam” in their holiday the Liberace Museum was founded in 1979 by the entertainer himself and features all his dazzling jewellery, outfits, sets and other memorabilia.
- Freemont Street – Just off the strip, downtown Las Vegas is where it all began. The Freemont St experience is a must for any visitor with bright neon signs and flashing lights lining the streets. The Vintage Vegas casinos are located here and some people are drawn here by the slightly less commercial and more laid back atmosphere. This is best experienced at night.
- Roller Coasters – You have four roller coasters to choose from all within close proximity of each other. The Manhattan Express @ New York New York Hotel, The Roller Coaster @ MGM Grand Adventures, The Canyon Blaster @ The Adventure dome and the High Roller @ The Stratosphere.
- Hoover Dam – About an hour from Las Vegas, unless you’re a high roller and flying there, the 380m long Hoover Dam holds back the waters of Lake Mead and is one of worlds most famous Dams. Its hydro electric power keeps the bright lights of Las Vegas Shining. Guided tours are available several times daily.
Where to Stay
As mentioned above the Nevada Desert is home to 15 of the 20 biggest hotels of the world. Visitors can stay nestled in the recreations of New York or Paris. Perhaps discover the Canals of Venice in the Venetian or explore the Egyptian treasures to be found @ the Luxor Hotel? Despite the extravagance the room rates in Las Vegas are actually the lowest in the western world, all subsidised by the gamblers who are convinced this will be their lucky trip. If you're budget conscious be sure to shop around, with the best rates for many of the hotels to be found on their respective Facebook or Twitter pages.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Vegas is the best in the world, bar none. It's only when you experience it that you realise why the phrase "What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” was coined. Its worth pointing out that money really talks here and if you really want to go all out you’ll need it in volumes with admission for some of the nightclubs @ $50 and a Vodka & Mixer costing upwards of $15. A Las Vegas show will cost you no less, often more, in admission and have similar prices if they are serving alcohol. There really are far too many Shows, Nightclubs and Bars to go into specifics here. Heres what you should know...
Most of the larger hotels will have Nightclub like, aside from Ibiza, nothing you have seen before. David Guetta, Afrojack, Laidback Luke and all their other Mega DJs will have residencies here. If you're not on the guest list, and not dropping serious cash on table service, you'll be expected to wait in line for anything up to two hours for the most popular clubs. The rules are slightly different if you're female when you can bypass most lines and get free drinks for a period of time at many of the clubs.
The hotels will also have lounges, which are more along the lines of what we have in Ireland. Smaller in scale and without the headline DJs. Many people see these are a pre stage before heading to the main nightclub in the hotel but the action doesn't necessary stop here when the clubs open and can be worth hanging around if you don't want to face the club lines. Admission is usually free here and open bars are on offer to the ladies.

The casinos themselves will serve alcohol 24 hours a day and this is free to those who are Gambling. Be careful not to over indulge or your winning streak could turn sour very quickly.
Each hotel will also have a signature show on offer and although it may not sound appealing these really are produced on a scale you’ve never seen before. Definitely recommended for tourists if only once. A good tip is to head to the cheaptickets outlet on the strip across from NY NY early in the morning where they sell tickets for most shows @ up to half price.

Visitors today would find it hard to believe that only 70 years ago this thriving city was a backwater with less than a thousand inhabitants and they only tourists they attracted was railway passengers stopping off to stretch their legs on the long journey between LA and Salt Lake City.
Getting there
Las Vegas McCarran Airport is on the outskirts of the City but only about 2kms from the Strip. The International Terminal is actually smaller then the domestic one but still has all the facilities . Assuming you clear Immigration you're free to collect your bags and hit the strip. If you've planned on staying sober enough to drive a car, a shuttle bus from outside the terminal will take you to the purpose built car hire center. If you're looking to take a taxi to your hotel you'll find these outside the terminal too... There is a bus service that stops near most hotels on the strip but if you cant afford a taxi journey at this stage then you're probably in the wrong place
What to do
Well what do you want to do? Seriously you can do pretty much anything your Imagination, and wallet, will allow you.
- The Casinos – Las Vegas has 15 of the 20 biggest hotels in the world, all within walking distance of each other. Each one has its own theme to attract people in the hope they will spend some dollars @ the casino tables.
- There’s the two BILLION dollar Venetian Hotel and Casino modelled on Venice with its replica of St Marks Square and Canals that run throughout the property complete with gondola travel.
- The Italian themed Bellagio is one of Las Vegas’ more opulent hotels with its world famous water and music show featuring the most powerful water cannons on the planet.
- The Mirage is an MGM owned casino which has a Volcano that shoots 100ft Flames into the sky every 15 minutes . The aquarium located behind the check in desk is another popular free attraction the 20,000 gallon saltwater tank features all sorts of marine life from Sharks to Angelfish
- The Liberace Museum – For those wanting a little more “glam” in their holiday the Liberace Museum was founded in 1979 by the entertainer himself and features all his dazzling jewellery, outfits, sets and other memorabilia.
- Freemont Street – Just off the strip, downtown Las Vegas is where it all began. The Freemont St experience is a must for any visitor with bright neon signs and flashing lights lining the streets. The Vintage Vegas casinos are located here and some people are drawn here by the slightly less commercial and more laid back atmosphere. This is best experienced at night.
- Roller Coasters – You have four roller coasters to choose from all within close proximity of each other. The Manhattan Express @ New York New York Hotel, The Roller Coaster @ MGM Grand Adventures, The Canyon Blaster @ The Adventure dome and the High Roller @ The Stratosphere.
- Hoover Dam – About an hour from Las Vegas, unless you’re a high roller and flying there, the 380m long Hoover Dam holds back the waters of Lake Mead and is one of worlds most famous Dams. Its hydro electric power keeps the bright lights of Las Vegas Shining. Guided tours are available several times daily.
Where to Stay
As mentioned above the Nevada Desert is home to 15 of the 20 biggest hotels of the world. Visitors can stay nestled in the recreations of New York or Paris. Perhaps discover the Canals of Venice in the Venetian or explore the Egyptian treasures to be found @ the Luxor Hotel? Despite the extravagance the room rates in Las Vegas are actually the lowest in the western world, all subsidised by the gamblers who are convinced this will be their lucky trip. If you're budget conscious be sure to shop around, with the best rates for many of the hotels to be found on their respective Facebook or Twitter pages.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Vegas is the best in the world, bar none. It's only when you experience it that you realise why the phrase "What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” was coined. Its worth pointing out that money really talks here and if you really want to go all out you’ll need it in volumes with admission for some of the nightclubs @ $50 and a Vodka & Mixer costing upwards of $15. A Las Vegas show will cost you no less, often more, in admission and have similar prices if they are serving alcohol. There really are far too many Shows, Nightclubs and Bars to go into specifics here. Heres what you should know...
Most of the larger hotels will have Nightclub like, aside from Ibiza, nothing you have seen before. David Guetta, Afrojack, Laidback Luke and all their other Mega DJs will have residencies here. If you're not on the guest list, and not dropping serious cash on table service, you'll be expected to wait in line for anything up to two hours for the most popular clubs. The rules are slightly different if you're female when you can bypass most lines and get free drinks for a period of time at many of the clubs.
The hotels will also have lounges, which are more along the lines of what we have in Ireland. Smaller in scale and without the headline DJs. Many people see these are a pre stage before heading to the main nightclub in the hotel but the action doesn't necessary stop here when the clubs open and can be worth hanging around if you don't want to face the club lines. Admission is usually free here and open bars are on offer to the ladies.

The casinos themselves will serve alcohol 24 hours a day and this is free to those who are Gambling. Be careful not to over indulge or your winning streak could turn sour very quickly.
Each hotel will also have a signature show on offer and although it may not sound appealing these really are produced on a scale you’ve never seen before. Definitely recommended for tourists if only once. A good tip is to head to the cheaptickets outlet on the strip across from NY NY early in the morning where they sell tickets for most shows @ up to half price.

What you need to know:
You're staying in a Village about 1km from Hersonissos so on one hand you're not going to have drunken idiots falling around outside the hotel but you are going to have to travel a little for the nightlife, but admittedly not very far. There is a pub, the aptly named Hill 16, attached to the hotel so even if you don't fancy making the short taxi journey you wont be left without entertainment for the night.
The property, Frida Apartments, is exclusively Irish meaning you're likely to be among friends here. It's 2 star meaning expect it to be very, very basic.
For less then €300 though, does any of that really matter?

5 Tips for a Cheaper Holiday

Be willing to look outside the box.
Traditionally when booking a holiday we would have, went down to the local travel agent, picked up a half dozen brochures, flicked through them for days and finally settle on somewhere that's a compromise between cost and quality. It's less of a drawn out affair these days (for those who choose it not to be anyway) with the online travel agents offering instant holiday booking for those wanting to get it over with. The online option also offers holiday seekers more choice by allowing them access to the international tour operator market. While we still have online access to the likes of Direct Holidays, Panorama, Sunworld and Budget Travel... We now have access to the big time international players such as lastminute.com, ebookers.ie and expedia.com that can command huge discounts from hotels and airlines. We're not saying give your credit card to any Tom, Dick or Manuel on the promise of a cheap week in the sun but don't feel like you have to stick with the traditional Irish tour operators.
Be flexible with your dates.
You'll be surprised how much of a difference a week can mke, cost wise that is. Now this particular suggestion is useless to you if you have to work around school holidays or watertight holidays from work, but huge savings can be had for those willing to shift their plans by a week or two. This is true for both package deals and those booking flights and accommodation separately but especially so for the latter. Grab a pen and sheet of paper and quickly jot down the prices for the week before and week after the dates you had in your head, you might be surprised @ what you find...
Be willing to stay off the beaten track.
... Accommodation wise. Even if only slightly. How far you take this depends on what kind of holiday you've planned. Those looking for a young and lively 18-30s style holiday will want to stay as close to the action as possible, facilitating a quick turnaround when you finally do make it back to the apartment from a night out. Those on a quiet couples or relaxing family holiday probably won't mind taking a short taxi journey in the event that they do want to see the sights... for some people though seeing the sights counts as what they can see from their sun lounger by the pool every day so this isn't so much of an issue. Check out tripadvisor.com for independent reviews of hotels if you haven't been told good things by word of mouth.
If you can, go all inclusive.
After you book your holiday, the next most expensive outgoing while abroad will be food and drink. And for some people it's the only outgoing! More and more tour operators are offering an all inclusive option with packages and while the brochure prices for these options can seem excessive if you're to do the maths over the seven days there is often money to be saved here. Of course you have to be willing to eat the same selection of dishes most days but most resorts will be aware of this and try and mix things up during your stay. Look out for all inclusive options when booking your last minute deal, these are often only slightly dear then the self catering option and can offer huge savings over the week. Determined to go self catering? Get yourself down to the local supermarket when you get there for some cheap food and drink, there's no shame in being smart with your money!
Don't book tours through your holiday rep.
Commission – Commission – Commission, that's what goes through your holiday reps mind when they speak about the great tours they offer. Those wonderful welcome meetings they tell you that you absolutely need to attend are based around selling you the thing that travel agents make the most from, tours and excursions. If you absolutely must go on a tour, and you probablly should do at least something to experience life outside the resort, these can often be booked locally and more recently direct through a website offering huge savings versus the travel agents. You'll be surprised what Google and turn up and worst case scenario you call the holiday rep during the week and they'll be delighted to sell you the tour if you're happy it can't be gotten cheaper.
