So we're just about clear of the recession. That doesn't mean all people, especially families, have the disposable income to be splashing out on 2 week breaks in Orlando. An interesting article by Sean Poulter shows how many families will be getting a break this year by simply downsizing their holidays...
Families are downsizing their holidays in an attempt to save money. Many are cutting 14-night trips to ten, and one-week breaks to just four nights away, research shows. In fact there has been a 162 per cent rise in the number booking ten-night holidays so far this year, and the figure for four nights is up 50 per cent. The decision will undoubtedly cut the price of going away. However, shorter trips offer less value for money in terms of the average cost per night, researchers warn. For example, the average ‘per night’ cost of a 14-night holiday is £65.19, compared with £82.70 for one lasting ten. Similarly, a seven-night break works out at an average of £74.71 per night, compared with £112.59 for a four-night equivalent. Trevor Davis, of Co-operative Travel, which carried out the study of three million holidays, said: ‘This saves you money on living expenses or extras, such as a hire car, but may mean that you’re not getting the best value for money as far as your actual booking is concerned. 'The mainstream holiday industry is still based on weekly blocks, with hotels and flight capacity based around set “changeover” days. ‘Anything that breaks with this is often penalised with higher prices. ‘We’d encourage anyone looking at downsizing their holiday to ask their travel agent to also provide the cost of a seven or 14-night break. ‘People can then look at the “per-night” costs and work out whether they’re saving as much as they first thought.’ Meanwhile, millions of people are giving up on the idea of having a foreign holiday this year completely. The number of foreign trips taken by Britons in the final three months of 2010 was down by 1.3million – 9 per cent – on the same period a year earlier. That pattern is predicted to continue through 2011 as families attempt to ride out the squeeze caused by a combination of rising prices and little – if any – increase in salaries. The situation is not helped by travel companies having fuel supplement surcharges of up to £40 per person.
